The issue dates range from 1940 to 1971, with four of the stamps being issued during the war itself by Franklin Roosevelt, a dedicated philatelist who personally approved (and occasionally designed) stamps during his administration.

Navy, Coast Guard and Marines from 1945's Armed Forces Series), slogans (1942's 3-cent eagle with a Win the War banner) and other symbols of freedom, such as the Trio of Defense, a 1940 series promoting national preparedness through the Torch of Enlightenment, the Statue of Liberty and a 90-millimeter anti-aircraft gun.
